What inspired you to write?
Through the years, many people have told me I should write for a living. While I dismissed this for awhile and considered it more of a pipe dream, a dear friend’s nudge back in 2011 gave me the final push I needed to begin blogging and eventually pursue my master’s in Creative Writiing and English. That program sealed the deal for me and I have been pursuing writing ever since.
What genres do you write in?
I write in both fiction and nonfiction genres, exploring Christ-centric themes of redemption transformation, forgiveness, personal growth, and the diverse complexities of life. My works aim to glorify God first and to engage readers second. Through my nonfiction works I do by sharing candid, personal experiences from my own life mixed with my odd humor that flavors my life journey. As a fiction writer, I enjoy crafting tales that draw readers in through their senses to teach universal truths and bring the hard lessons of life alive.
How do you approach writing?
For nonfiction, I may assemble a vague outline before writing but usually just begin writing the story off the top of my head. Then I polish the draft into a more cohesive work. However, for fiction, I tend to employ many different methods like drawing up places, making notes and writing various sections to figure out what I want to accomplish. Then I come up with a plan to finish out the first draft. It’s more messy and disorganized at this point but I love evaluating my work processes and finding ways to improve them in all areas of my work.
Do you have any upcoming projects?
Yes, I am currently working on a novel that delves into the intricacies of relationships and personal identity. Additionally, I am finalizing the story of my late son, Andrew, and how he showed me so much in his short life.
